🎯 Introduction
Welcome back to another tutorial by Nikki! Today, I'm going to show you how to make a stylish and functional wristlet that you can customize for yourself or gift to someone special. This wristlet project is quick, easy, and perfect for the holiday season or any occasion. With just a few materials and some basic sewing skills, you'll be able to create a practical accessory that can be used as a wallet, phone holder, or keychain. So let's get started!
🧵 Materials Needed
Before we begin, let's gather all the materials you'll need for this project:
- Outer fabric
- Inner fabric (lining)
- Pellon 809 interface
- Zipper (longer than 9 inches)
- O-ring
- Clasp
- Scissors
- Pins
- Chopstick
- Iron
Now that we have everything ready, let's move on to the first step!
Step 1: Preparing the Outer Fabric
The first step is to prepare the outer fabric by ironing the interface onto it. This interface will give the wristlet a bit of stiffness, allowing it to hold its shape. Start by placing the shiny side of the interface onto the wrong side of the outer fabric. Make sure there are no scraps or uneven edges exposed. Use your iron to press the fabric and interface together until they adhere properly. Repeat this process for both pieces of outer fabric.
Step 2: Creating the Tab
Next, let's create the tab for the wristlet. Take the small piece of fabric measuring 3 by 5 inches and fold it in half lengthwise. Finger press it to create a crease, then unfold it and fold the raw edges towards the center crease. Fold it in half again, enclosing the raw edges inside. Iron it to secure the folds.
Step 3: Making the Strap
Now it's time to make the strap for the wristlet. Take the long piece of fabric measuring 3 inches wide by 18 inches long. Follow the same process as before, folding the fabric in half lengthwise, finger pressing, and then folding the raw edges towards the center crease. Fold it in half again and iron it to secure the folds.
Once both the tab and strap are folded and ironed, it's time to sew them. Using your sewing machine, sew down both sides of the tab and strap about 1/8 of an inch from the edges. This will give them a neat and polished look. Take your time and sew slowly to ensure accuracy.
Step 4: Sewing the Body
Now that we have our prepared fabric pieces and straps, let's move on to sewing the body of the wristlet. First, take the lining fabric and place it face up. Align the zipper (with its raw edges lined up) on top of the lining fabric, and place one piece of outer fabric (shiny side facing down) on top, making sure all raw edges are aligned. Pin the layers together to keep them in place.
Using a regular sewing foot, sew straight down the edge from top to bottom, securing the three layers together. Repeat this step with the other side, making sure to align the raw edges of the fabric and zipper. Once sewn, open up the fabric layers and iron them to create a crisp look. This will also help the zipper glide smoothly.
Next, fold the fabric so that the outer fabric pieces are right sides together and the lining fabric pieces are right sides together. Pin them together along the raw edges. Starting from the lining side, sew a quarter-inch seam allowance all the way around, leaving a small opening for turning.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
With the body of the wristlet securely sewn, it's time to add the finishing touches. Turn the wristlet right side out through the opening you left earlier. Use a chopstick or your finger to push out the corners and make sure everything is evenly shaped. Iron the wristlet to give it a professional and polished look.
Attach the clasp to the strap by sliding it through the O-ring. Then, fold the strap in half and sew across the folded end to secure the clasp in place. Trim any excess threads for a clean finish.
Finally, tuck the strap into the wristlet, making sure the clasp is facing towards the zipper end. Sew a straight line across the top of the wristlet to hold the strap in place. Backstitch at the beginning and end for added durability.
Congratulations! You have successfully completed your own handmade wristlet. Play around with different fabrics, patterns, and strap lengths to personalize your wristlet to suit your style or give it as a thoughtful gift.
