Introduction
Welcome to episode 40 of the Pearls and Polish podcast! I'm your host Rachel, coming to you from just outside Sacramento, California. In this episode, we'll be catching up on my knitting projects, sharing some exciting acquisitions, discussing my current reading and watching choices, and diving into some life updates. So grab your yarn and let's get started!
Recap of Previous Episode
Before we jump into the latest projects, let's recap what happened in the previous episode. As you may remember, there was no episode last week because I was on vacation. But don't worry, I'll be filling you in on all the details in just a bit. It feels great to be back in front of the camera and sharing my progress with all of you.
Forgotten Objects Projects
As you may recall, I had set a goal for myself in 2024 to complete all the forgotten projects that have been lying around unfinished for the past few years. These projects hold sentimental value and completing them gives me a sense of accomplishment. Let's take a look at a couple of these projects that I finally finished.
The Watch Cap and Mittens
Originally intended to be a tank top, this project took a different turn and became a hat. I used the Watch Cap and Mittens pattern by Pearl Soho for inspiration. The hat turned out a bit looser than expected, so it might end up being a gift for my husband. Luckily, I have some leftover yarn from the set, so I can always knit another hat in a smaller size. The gloves, on the other hand, fit perfectly and are incredibly warm.
The Fingerless Mitts
Another forgotten object project I tackled was a pair of fingerless mitts. I followed the pattern as written, but made them a bit longer to keep my hands warm. These mitts are not only practical but also stylish. I'm thrilled with how they turned out and can't wait to wear them.
Finished Projects
Now, let's move on to the finished projects from my knitting endeavors. I've been quite productive lately, and I have a handful of projects to showcase.
End Grain Shawl
One of my proudest achievements is completing the End Grain Shawl. This pattern was an absolute joy to work with, and the end result is stunning. The shawl turned out larger than expected, which is perfect for keeping warm during chilly weather. I envision myself wearing it wrapped around my neck, tucked under my jacket to stay cozy. The step-by-step instructions made this project a breeze, and I'm already planning to knit more shawls using this pattern.
Old Romance Socks
Next on the list are the Old Romance socks. These were originally part of a sample knit, but I decided to change the pattern as I wasn't satisfied with the initial design. I switched to the High Desert Socks pattern by Lindsay Fowler, which has become my go-to pattern for DK weight socks. The versatility of this pattern allows me to experiment with different color combinations and styles. These socks turned out wonderfully, and I can't wait to wear them.
Bella's Vintage Valentine Box Socks
During my vacation, I took the opportunity to work on the Bella's Vintage Valentine Box socks. The yarn used for these socks was an exclusive colorway by Tiny Human Knits, and it's absolutely gorgeous. I marled the yarn with a complementary color to break up the pattern and create visual interest. The result is stunning, and I am incredibly pleased with how these socks turned out. Before wearing them, I still need to give them a bath, but I'm excited to show them off.
Knit-Along and Acquisitions
Now, let's talk about the exciting knit-along I recently joined and some new yarn acquisitions that have sparked my creativity.
I Love Books and Sock Knitting Knit-Along
I'm thrilled to participate in the "I Love Books and Sock Knitting" knit-along hosted by Denise of Earth Tones Girl. This knit-along celebrates the joy of reading and knitting socks. The concept is simple: for two months, from March 1st to May 1st, participants can read books and knit socks. The beauty of this knit-along is that it allows for personalization in both reading and knitting choices. Whether you prefer physical books, audiobooks, or e-books, and whether you're knitting for yourself or others, all options are welcome. I can't wait to immerse myself in literary worlds while knitting cozy socks.
New Yarn Acquisitions
Just before my vacation, I received three new yarn acquisitions. One of them was a pre-order from Freckled Whimsy, featuring the Zodiac colorways. As an Aquarius, I couldn't resist the Aquarius colorway that was released last year. I also added the Specto Patronum colorway from Machete Shop, which caught my eye with its beautiful color combination. Lastly, I received the latest installment of the Woolberry Collective subscription, featuring the Button Jar colorway. These additions to my yarn collection have me brimming with excitement for future projects.
Reading and Watching Updates
Moving on to my current reading and watching choices, here's what has been keeping me entertained.
I'm currently engrossed in "SI and Storm" by Leigh Bardugo, the second book in her GrishaVerse series. This captivating fantasy novel enthralls me with its rich world-building and compelling characters. If you haven't delved into this series yet, I highly recommend starting with "Shadow and Bone," which was also adapted into a fantastic TV show on Netflix.
As for TV shows, I've decided to re-watch "The Magicians." This series holds a special place in my heart, and I find comfort in revisiting the magical world portrayed onscreen. Although I've watched it several times before, the intricate plot and well-developed characters never fail to captivate me.
Life Updates
Now, let's take a break from knitting and indulge in some life updates that have been happening in my world.
Firstly, I had the opportunity to visit my sister who resides in Southern California. Normally, our visits would be packed with countless activities, but this time we decided to take it easy. We focused on relaxation, ordered takeout, watched movies, and even took naps. It was a much-needed break, and spending time with my sister was refreshing and rejuvenating.
In other news, I recently tested for and achieved my yellow belt in Taekwondo. Taking Taekwondo classes with my kids has been an enjoyable experience. Learning self-defense techniques and improving my physical fitness has been rewarding. Plus, it's a great way to learn how to hit things!
However, not all has been smooth sailing. Illness and allergies have been making their way through my household. With the changeable weather and blooming flowers, allergies have been a constant battle. Additionally, one of my children recently contracted pink eye, so we have been taking extra precautions to prevent its spread. Despite these challenges, we're doing our best to stay healthy and manage the situations as they arise.
February Stats
Let's dive into some statistics for the month of February. I like to keep track of my reading and knitting progress to stay accountable and measure my accomplishments.
In terms of reading, I completed a total of five books during the month. I also started another book but haven't finished it yet. Reading has been a source of relaxation and escape for me, and I'm proud of the progress I made.
When it comes to my yarn stash, I had five new skeins come in during February. On the other hand, I used up thirteen skeins, including several that were sold or gifted. As a result, my yarn stash currently stands at 87 skeins. I'm working diligently to knit from my stash and make intentional purchases, avoiding impulsive buys driven by FOMO (fear of missing out).
Conclusion
That wraps up episode 40 of the Pearls and Polish podcast. I hope you enjoyed catching up on my knitting projects, learning about the knit-along and yarn acquisitions, and hearing about my reading and watching updates. Life has had its ups and downs, but overall, I'm grateful for the moments of joy and creativity. Thank you for joining me, and I'll see you next week for another exciting episode!
