👗 Episode 40: Knitting, Reading, and Life Updates!

Introduction

Welcome to the Pearls and Polish podcast! I'm Rachel, your host, coming to you from just outside Sacramento, California. In this episode, we'll be diving into all things knitting, books, and life updates. If you're new here, a warm welcome to you. And if you're a returning viewer, welcome back! This podcast is my little corner of the internet where I share what I've been working on and the things that inspire me. Let's jump right into episode 40!

Recap of Vacation

Last week, we took a little break and didn't have an episode since I was on vacation. But don't worry, I'll fill you in on all the details. It's great to be back in front of the camera and share what I've been working on with all of you.

Forgotten Object Projects

I set a goal for myself this year to finish all the forgotten projects I started in the last few years. This helps me keep my Works in Progress manageable and removes the pressure of deadlines and commitments. One of these projects was originally meant to be a tank top but ended up becoming a hat. I also knit a pair of fingerless mitts to go with it. The hat turned out a bit looser than expected, but it will find a home with either myself, my kids, or my husband.

Finished Projects

In the past week, I have completed four (technically five) projects. Firstly, I finished knitting an end grain shawl, which turned out to be quite large. I love how it wraps around my neck and keeps me warm. Secondly, I completed a pair of socks using the "Old Romance" pattern. While I initially attempted a different pattern, I ended up knitting the High Desert Socks by Lindsay Fowler, which I have made multiple times before. These DK socks are versatile and perfect for wearing with boots. Finally, I knit a pair of socks using a self-striping yarn for a Valentine's Day-themed yarn box. I love how the colors turned out and can't wait to wear them.

Works in Progress

Since I was on vacation, I took a couple of works in progress (WIPs) with me. I wanted to have some knitting to keep me busy during downtime. One of the projects I had already started, and the other I cast on during the flight. Both projects are sock tubes, which are knitted flat and later transformed into socks. I'm excited to finish these and start working on the next pair. I am also participating in a knit-along called "I Love Books and Sock Knitting," hosted by Denise of Earth Tones Girl.

Knit-Along Announcement

The "I Love Books and Sock Knitting" knit-along is a two-month event where participants read books and knit socks. It's a wonderful way to combine two of my favorite pastimes. I have already selected 24 colorways from my stash and put them in a bowl. Every time I'm ready to start a new pair of socks, I will randomly pick a colorway from the bowl. I'm excited to participate and share my progress throughout the event.

Acquisitions

Just before my vacation, I made three new yarn acquisitions. I pre-ordered two beautiful colorways: "Zodiac" by Laena & Me, inspired by Spirited Away, and "Specto Patronum" by Machete Shop, a Harry Potter-themed yarn. Additionally, I received a new yarn from Woolberry Collective called "Button Jar." I'm thrilled to have these additions to my stash and look forward to incorporating them into future projects.

Reading and Watching Updates

Currently, I am reading "Siege and Storm" by Leigh Bardugo, the second book in the Grisha Verse series. I'm a big fan of the author and thoroughly enjoying this fantasy world. As for TV shows, I'm re-watching "The Magicians" as a comfort show. I find it relaxing to revisit a familiar series when I need a break.

Life Updates

In personal news, I recently tested for my yellow belt in Taekwondo and passed! I've been having a great time learning martial arts alongside my children. Additionally, I've been spending quality time with my sister, who lives in Southern California. This year, we took a more relaxed approach to our usual activities, focusing on sleep, takeout food, and enjoying each other's company.

Monthly Stats

In February, I managed to read five books and complete five knitting projects. I also had several new yarn acquisitions, but I've been actively working on reducing my stash. Currently, I have 87 skeins of yarn, and I'm trying to be more intentional with my purchases. It's all about finding a balance between enjoying new yarns and using up what I already have.

Thank you for joining me in this episode of the Pearls and Polish podcast. I hope you enjoyed hearing about my knitting projects, book recommendations, and life updates. Stay tuned for more episodes and happy knitting!
