Lesson 1: God's Reach for a Rebellious People
In Isaiah chapter 65, the prophet Isaiah discusses the righteousness of God and the remnant of His people. The passage begins with God expressing His frustration towards a rebellious and disobedient people. God says, "I have stretched out my hands all day long to a rebellious people who walk in a way that is not good according to their own thoughts" (Isaiah 65:2). Despite God's continuous effort to reach out to them, the people provoke Him to anger continually and engage in sinful behaviors. They offer sacrifices in gardens, burn incense on altars of brick, and engage in practices that go against God's commands. The people even have the audacity to declare themselves as holier than God and ask Him to keep His distance. God describes these actions as smoke in His nostrils and a fire that burns all day (Isaiah 65:5). The primary lesson we learn from this passage is the importance of obedience and the consequences of rebelling against God or disregarding His commands.
