🔍 Taking Down the Steelwatch and Rescuing the Gondians: A Comprehensive Guide
Welcome everyone! If you are lost on the quest to take down the Steelwatch and rescue the Gondians, you're in the right place. This guide covers every major step in the quest line. For easy navigation, you can find chapters in the description below.
1. Infiltrating the Iron Hands' Hideout
👉 Heading to the Rivington Hideout
If you've been following the Iron Hands quest line, head to their Rivington hideout in a cave below the cliff near Sword Coast Couriers. Inside, speak with Wulbren, accept his request, and you will get a rune powder bomb for later use. If your choices prevent this, don't worry, I will also show you an alternative method to deal with the Steelwatch.
2. The Foundry: Finding Toobin
👉 Infiltrating the Foundry
Your next move is to infiltrate the Foundry. While there are various approaches, I've found the simplest way is to stealthily slip through the main gate. I strongly recommend approaching this section with a single high dexterity character, carrying lockpicks and able to cast Speak with the Dead or alternatively Fly or Misty Step. Keep in mind that these are optional and only necessary if you wish to explore every minor step in the quest line.
Once inside, moving towards the people in the center of the first area will trigger a cutscene. Afterwards, unless you want to pass a deception check to avoid starting a fight with the guards, I encourage you to stealth your way following my steps. Your destination is the offices in the back, where you will meet Toobin, the Gondian. Toobin is crucial if you couldn't acquire the rune powder bomb, as he is the only one who knows how to disable the Steelwatch by alternative means. By talking with him, he will agree to fight at your side along with the other Gondians if you first free their families, who are being held hostage. To find where they are imprisoned, you'll need to venture into the lower levels of the foundry.
3. Rescuing the Gondian Hostages
👉 Locating the Hostages
There are two ways to find the hostages' location that do not involve fighting. Whichever you choose, while down here, remain stealthed the entire time and be wary of the mechs patrolling the area.
The first and fastest method requires Fly or Misty Step to reach a document on a shelf on the other side of the area.
The second method, while slightly slower, only requires Speak with the Dead and some attention to your movements. You will need to reach a corpse nearby and question him about the hostages' whereabouts.
Once your quest is updated, you can go back the same way you came from and leave the foundry.
4. Flym Cargo: Journey to the Iron Throne
👉 Heading to Flym Cargo
Your next destination will be Flym Cargo, a warehouse by the docks. Inside, you will have to fight a pack of wargs and then head down a hatch hidden below some crates in a corner of the area. Keep exploring this underground level until you reach a room with a dwarf standing by a submersible. Talk with him and convince him to carry your party to the Iron Throne. During the trip, Gortash will warn us that if we proceed, he will kill everyone, but we have no choice.
Dock and get ready to face a difficult scenario. While I can't tell you which party members to bring for this, I can provide insights on how I personally dealt with the situation. You will have a limited number of available turns, depending on the difficulty level you're playing at, to rescue everyone before the place finally explodes. There are three groups to save: the hostage Gondians, Omeluum the mind flayer (if you've met him before), and Wyll's father, Duke Ravengard.
My recommendation is to take a character with healing abilities like Shadowheart to rescue the duke in the eastward, a character with decent mobility and damage to rescue the hostages in the westward, and the characters with the best mobility and possibly damage south and southwest, to rescue the remaining hostages and Omeluum.
5. Saving the Hostages and Duke Ravengard
👉 The Rescue Mission
To break Omeluum's door, you will need a character with a blunt weapon that can hit for at least 50 damage in a single swing. Once freed, Omeluum will be able to teleport himself and one nearby ally directly to the submersible. As soon as you try to move the duke back to safety, if Wyll broke his contract earlier on in Act 3, Mizora will appear and attempt to assassinate his father by spawning some exploding spiders. Make sure you keep healing him as much as possible, otherwise, he will most definitely die here. As the timer runs out, anyone who didn't board back on the submersible will die. Don't worry about our party members; we will be able to revive them at Withers. Once back in town, your final destination will be once again the Foundry.
6. Returning to the Foundry
👉 Joining the Gondian Revolt
Head to the Foundry to find that the Gondians have already started their revolt. Assist them in dealing with the upper-level guards and make sure to disarm the motivators as they turn on. Then, talk with Toobin and decide if you want to blow up the place with the bomb or if you want him to disable the foundry himself. Finally, move on to the lower levels. Here we will deal with a similar fight and then head into the last section. I recommend you be well rested before entering the final room as there will be a boss fight involving 3 steel watch robot pawns and a much bigger and stronger one. Once done with the fight, don't forget to loot the mech to find the legendary bow, Gontr Mael. Finally, interact with the console, place the bomb, and enjoy the cutscene. There is one more surprise happening after the explosion, and I teased it at the beginning of the video, but I won't spoil it for you.
